JM Desk — July 1, 2026:
Microsoft is reportedly preparing another round of layoffs that could affect fewer than 2.5% of its global workforce, according to a Business Insider report citing people familiar with the matter. The cuts, which could be announced as early as next week, are expected to impact thousands of employees across sales, consulting and the Xbox gaming division.
The company declined to comment on the report.
The reported move comes as technology companies continue balancing cost reductions with heavy investment in artificial intelligence. Microsoft employed about 228,000 full-time workers as of June 30, 2025, according to its latest annual filing.
For employees who remain after the restructuring, the biggest challenge may not be job security but adapting to a company that is rapidly changing its priorities.
Microsoft has increasingly focused its investments on AI infrastructure, cloud computing and AI-powered software. That means teams aligned with these areas could see greater strategic importance, while some traditional business functions may continue to evolve.
Remaining employees should expect organizational changes beyond workforce reductions. Teams may be merged, managers reassigned and responsibilities expanded as the company reallocates resources.
Career development may also become more important. Building skills related to AI tools, cloud services, automation and data analysis could help employees align with Microsoft's long-term direction as the company continues integrating AI across its products and internal operations.
Communication is likely to become another priority. Employees may benefit from staying informed through official company announcements rather than relying on rumors, while maintaining regular discussions with managers about team goals and evolving business priorities.
The reported layoffs also serve as a reminder of the broader trend across the technology sector. Companies are increasingly investing in AI while seeking efficiencies in other parts of their businesses.
Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to reduce its workforce by 10%, while Amazon outlined plans to eliminate roughly 16,000 jobs globally.
Microsoft has already carried out significant workforce reductions in recent years. In July 2025, the company announced layoffs affecting nearly 4% of its workforce, one of its largest rounds of job cuts.
The Xbox business has also faced growing pressure. Earlier reports indicated that Microsoft was considering restructuring options for the gaming division while also reducing marketing spending and other budgets.
Although the reported layoffs remain unconfirmed by Microsoft, they underscore how rapidly changing technology priorities are reshaping the industry's workforce. For employees who remain, adapting to new responsibilities, strengthening AI-related skills and staying focused on the company's evolving strategy may be the most practical way to navigate another period of organizational change.
